ABC Commercial sells Series 2 of The WotWots to HBO Latin America


ABC Commercial has sold the second series of the internationally successful children’s animation series, The WotWots (26 x 12’ HD) to HBO Family Latin America. The deal is exclusive for two years and will involve each episode being dubbed into Brazilian Portuguese and neutral Spanish. The sale follows the broadcast of Series One (52 x 10’ HD) in 2011.

ABC Commercial notches up strong international and local program sales in 2011


ABC Commercial has had a bumper year for program sales, both in the local and international marketplace. The presence of ABC programs continued to grow in the Asian region and high profile deals were struck in the UK with BBC and Channel 4, while domestically there was continued strong demand for ABC programs.

The deals in 2011 included the first ever ABC Commercial program to screen on Universal Sports Network in the US, as
well as the first ABC Commercial comedy format to not only be picked up, but made in to a pilot in the US.

“It’s a brilliant effort by everyone and we’re looking to repeat these results next year. We have some excellent content coming through in 2012 and look forward to launching this at the markets,” said Natalie Lawley, ABC Commercial’s Manager of Content Sales.

Director of ABC Commercial, Lynley Marshall, said the 2011 results were due to a strong ABC Television slate combined
with an experienced Program Sales team. “It is clear that overseas broadcasters are looking to ABC in Australia more and more for top quality entertainment and information-based programming. With another strong ABC Television slate promised for 2012 we will be looking to capitalise on our performance and the interest shown in ABC programming from around the world.”

The highlights include:

Comedy series, Lowdown (8 x 30’) sold to BBC4 in the UK.

Drama series, Rake (8 x 60’) sold to Sparrowhawk International Channels Limited, to be broadcast on the Universal Channel in Australia.

The Four Corners title, Wikileaks - The Forgotten Man (1 x 45’) sold to seven countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia and overall the current affairs titles have had fantastic results in the US, Europe, Scandinavia and Latin America.

Factual program, Rare Chicken Rescue (1 x 30’) sold to Channel 4 in the UK.

The internationally successful children’s animation series, The WotWots (52 x 10’) sold to HBO Family Latin America for Pay TV and VOD rights.

Chris Lilley’s Angry Boys (12 x 30’) sold to FOXTEL’s Comedy Channel in Australia, while Viacom’s Comedy Central took premiere rights for New Zealand.

The animated Bananas in Pyjamas series (104 x 12’) sold to Disney Junior and five free to air broadcasters in the Asia Pacific region.

A selection of more than one hundred episodes of Australia Story sold to FOXTEL’S Bio Channel.

Poh's Kitchen Series Two sold to Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific.

Rugby documentary, Cup of Dreams (1 x 60’ HD) was licensed to the UNIVERSAL SPORTS NETWORK in the US, where it screened in prime time during October, in the lead up to the Rugby World Cup Final.

The format option for the ABC comedy series Review with Myles Barlow (12 x 30' and 1 x 30') sold to Comedy
Central in the US who are developing a pilot, Review With Forrest MacNeil.

ABC Commercial has partnered with Hewlett-Packard Australia to supply ABC News content to their new web-enabled printers with HP Print Apps. The ABC News print application, downloadable directly from HP printers, provides users with direct access to up-to-date local ABC news and headlines and converts it to a printable newspaper format with no need to turn on a PC. The categories available are business, sport, entertainment, world news, and national news.

Jack Egan’s Cricket Legacy


Sadly, one of Australia’s great commentators on the game of Cricket passed away earlier this year.

Jack Egan had worked closely with ABC Sport and ABC Archives over the years. He spent many hours in the ABC archives cataloguing the ABC cricket archive from 1958-79, the years when the ABC had exclusive rights to the television coverage of cricket in Australia.
